On May 13th, Timmins held their local Steps for Life walk, with opening ceremonies held at the Lion’s Club Pavilion on McIntyre Road.
This was the 11th annual Steps for Life walk in the area and the 9th that DSB1 proudly participated in.
DSB1 provides a trailer for Registration and distribution of shirts as well as support for Signage and walk preparations.
This is the second year the Walk was opened by our former Mayor and now our current MMP, George Pirie.
He spoke to the people gathered about the importance of the walk, its significance and related his personal connections to the cause.
The Committee Chair and Emcee was Allen Armstrong. After opening remarks and a Land Acknowledgement, George Rose of Attawapaskat First Nation participated in smudging.
George’s wife, Holly Rodrique, lead the Healing Song by the New Moon Singers to kick off the walk.
Next year, the event hopes to build momentum to honour all workers injured or lost on the job due to accidents or workplace illnesses.
This is an annual rain, snow or shine event where everyone is welcome to come and support the families of workers who have suffered a loss.
We walk for those who cannot.
We raise awareness about safety for new and current workers.
We want everyone to return home safely every day.
