Just one example of an inspiring Indigenous woman is Vanessa Genier, M.S.M from Missanabie Cree First Nation, a mother and the founder of Quilts for Survivors based in Timmins. DSB1 students had the honour of learning from Vanessa during a classroom visit.
Quilts for Survivors is a not-for-profit organization with a mission of creating comfort and healing through the making and giving of handmade quilts to survivors of the Residential School System and survivors of other trauma. Through a nationwide collective effort of volunteers who donate sewn blocks, these blocks are sewn together to make full-sized quilts, and are a symbol of support, respect, and love.
